What does concentration mean?

Concentration describes the amount of a substance contained within a specified volume of solution. This calculator presents the primary result in milligrams per millilitre.

Why is concentration shown in mg/mL?

Milligrams per millilitre is a commonly used expression of mass concentration. Equivalent mcg/mL and mcg/µL values are also displayed for convenient laboratory reference.

Does this calculator provide a recommended amount?

No. The calculator performs a mathematical concentration calculation only. It does not recommend quantities, procedures, administration methods or intended uses.

Can this replace independent laboratory calculations?

No. Results should always be independently checked before being used within any research workflow. Users remain responsible for verifying inputs, units and calculations.

Are calculations sent to PS Labs?

No. Calculations are completed within the visitor’s browser. Saved calculations are also retained locally in that browser unless they are cleared by the visitor.

Dilution calculation questions

What is a laboratory dilution?

A dilution reduces the concentration of a stock solution by combining a calculated quantity of that solution with additional solvent or diluent to achieve a larger final volume.

What does C₁V₁ = C₂V₂ mean?

C₁ and V₁ describe the starting stock solution. C₂ and V₂ describe the intended final solution. The relationship assumes the amount of dissolved material is conserved during a straightforward dilution.

Can different concentration units be used?

Yes. The calculator accepts mg/mL, mcg/mL and ng/mL and converts them to a common internal unit before completing the calculation.

What if the target concentration exceeds the stock concentration?

A simple dilution cannot produce a concentration greater than the original stock concentration. The calculator will display an error if the selected target exceeds the available stock concentration.

Does this calculator provide laboratory procedural instructions?

What is an aliquot?

An aliquot is a measured portion removed from a larger laboratory sample or solution for analytical, testing or experimental purposes.

What information is required?

The calculator requires the known solution concentration and the selected mass to be contained within the aliquot. Available solution volume is optional.

Why is available solution volume optional?

The aliquot volume can be calculated without knowing the total available volume. Adding it allows the calculator to estimate the number of complete equal aliquots and the remaining solution volume.

Does the calculator recommend an aliquot mass?

No. The calculator does not select or recommend any quantity. It only calculates the theoretical volume associated with values entered by the user.
